SG Nursing Board - To be or not to be?

I received the renewal letter for my registration renewal with the Singapore Nursing Board recently.

[SNB letter sent to my Canadian postal address]

Previously, I have maintained my Singapore nursing registration (just in case I need a Plan B) while working towards my Canadian (i.e. British Columbia) nursing registration. Now that I've obtained my B.C. nursing licence, the question is whether to continue with my Singapore registration.

I do not see myself returning to nursing in Singapore, given the very different work and/or nursing culture there. [IMHO, it is a rather inhumane and inequitable work culture. Click here to see what FrugalIntrovert wrote about the Singapore work and lifestyle norms.]

That said, it is hard to give up on one's roots. Similarly, on the issue of "to be or not to be a Singapore citizen" -- as per my comments on ASingaporeanSon's blog entry.

  1. Honestly, I felt you should renew it. It is less than a 100 dollars/year. No harm keeping a 2nd door open.

The future is unpredictable, you never know when this 'inhumane and inequitable work culture' might seems rosy to you.

  2. I have registration with 3 countries.

Always keep a door or two open.

  5. I agree with all. Having more is always better than having lesser. ;) Good luck! :)

  6. I burnt mine. Not returning to Singapore EVER. Been overseas for more than a decade. In Singapore, you are stuck in the nursing field. Overseas, they do it differently. There are epidemiologists who are nurses, Public Health officers who are nurses, statisticians who are nurses. I am an epidemiologist with statistical training and a nursing background overseas. If I stayed on in Singapore......probably just another SSN or SNO. Even having said that, I made it to the equivalent of an NO in 2 years for having clinical experience of 4 years and the clinical competency. In Singapore, I probably have to wait long long or be a PMC scholar.
